Everton flop Neal Maupay told to ‘retire’ by Chris Sutton after what happened

Chris Sutton has criticised Everton flop Neal Maupay after what he did for Brentford against Chelsea on Saturday (28 October).

Speaking on the BBC’s The Monday Night Club on 30 October, the pundit said the 27-year-old forward should “retire” after he failed to put the ball into an empty net for the Bees.

The Frenchman broke forward with the ball and just had an empty net to tap into after Robert Sanchez had gone forward for a late corner, but the keeper made it back to tackle the striker before it broke to Bryan Mbuemo and he made it 2-0.

“If I was Neal Maupay, I tell you, I’d retire,” said Sutton. “I mean come on.”

Not good enough

It’s pretty clear that Maupay isn’t currently at the required standard to be playing Premier League football on a regular basis.

The forward endured an extremely difficult time with Everton after making the move from Brighton in 2022, scoring just one goal in 32 appearances at Goodison Park.

His fortunes haven’t improved much since making the switch to Brentford on loan over the summer after failing to find the back of the net in his opening five games for the club.

The Frenchman looked destined to score against Chelsea, but he was far too passive on the ball before Sanchez caught up with him and poked the ball away.

It’s a real surprise that the Bees wanted to re-sign him after his form over the past year and it doesn’t look like improving any time soon.
