Amadou Onana must ‘do more’ for Everton with more consistency needed – Paul Brown

Paul Brown has called upon Amadou Onana to impact matches more consistently for Everton, with the midfielder expected to “do more” at Goodison Park.

The Belgian international has been one of the Toffees’ brightest players so far this season and has put in back-to-back excellent performances against West Ham United and Burnley in the Carabao Cup, including a second-half goal.

But the former Daily Star journalist believes that the 22-year-old is still capable of becoming even better for Sean Dyche’s side in the future and hopes that he can consistently match the standards that he showed at the London Stadium.

Speaking to Give Me Sport (2 November) Brown said: “With Onana, he’s got everything that you need to be a really dominant midfielder in the Premier League. But for him, it’s just about consistency, consistency, consistency. He’s got to find a way to impact games on a more consistent basis.

“I think he’s got the potential to be running Premier League games but sometimes he drifts in and out a little bit. Statistically, he’s been really important for Everton this season.

“But I still think he can do more and I still think there’s more to come from him. So, hopefully, Sunday was a sign of things to come.”

More to come

Onana’s ceiling could be higher than most players at Goodison Park and that is displayed by just how much everyone expects of the Belgian, even though he has already been in such exceptional form in the early parts of the campaign.

The 22-year-old has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the division when he is at his best and while he has never been outright bad in an Everton shirt, he hasn’t managed to match the levels that he has shown he is capable of reaching consistently.

Everton have improved in recent weeks and Onana has been integral to that development, the next step for the midfielder is to produce match-defining displays week in and week out and then he can be considered as one of the better players in the division.

His displays against West Ham and Burnley are an excellent foundation to build from and if he can follow it up with a good display on Saturday 4 November, against Brighton, it could well be a sign that he has finally found the consistency that Brown has asked for.

If he does continue to get better and better, however, it will only increase the chances of another club making a move for the Belgian in January.
