Glenn Murray reacts to ‘awful’ incident in Everton v Brighton draw live on BBC

Glenn Murray described the own goal scored by Ashley Young in the Premier League clash between Everton and Brighton and Hove Albion as “awful”.

Everton were leading Saturday’s (4 November) contest at Goodison Park through an early Vitaliy Mykolenko goal when undone by some terrible misfortune.

Kaoru Mitoma’s cross from the left took a huge deflection off Young’s knee and looped over Jordan Pickford, who had little chance of keeping the ball out.

Speaking on BBC Sport’s Final Score [4 November, 16:50], Murray said: “It is an awful goal to concede but a really lucky one for Brighton. They needed that.

“It has come from such an unlikely source. It just flicks from Ashley Young and just loops over the goalkeeper.”

Fair outcome

Brighton dominated possession, but Everton’s gameplan almost worked to perfection as they were on the verge of victory against the Seagulls.

Young’s own goal came in the 86th minute, denying Everton what would have been a third successive victory.

Still, Everton had a contentious decision go their way in the first half when Lewis Dunk’s thunderous strike was ruled out for offside.

Everton

A point at home to Brighton is hardly the worst result in the world, either, especially on the back of a couple of wins over the past week.

While Sean Dyche’s side had double the number of shots on target as their opponents, the outcome was pretty fair on the face of it.

Luck may not have been on Everton’s side with the late goal conceded, but the players can hold their heads up high after really stepping up this week.

In other Everton news, former referee Mike Dean says it was a “shame” the officials made a certain decision at Goodison Park.
