Gabby Agbonlahor suggests Ben Godfrey is ‘not showing enough’ in Everton training

Ben Godfrey’s lack of minutes at Everton this season may be due to the player “not showing enough” in training, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

The centre-back has made just two appearances in all competitions this season under Toffees manager Sean Dyche.

Godfrey played one minute in the league draw with Sheffield United in September and 90 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Doncaster Rovers in August.

“Maybe he is not showing enough in training,” Agbonlahor said live on talkSPORT. “You know, there were some strange decisions with Demarai Gray leaving, Iwobi left as well.

After spending time on the bench in the early stages of the season, Godfrey perhaps thought he was in his manager’s good books again after being handed minutes in back-to-back games against Doncaster and Sheffield United.

But the centre-back found himself back among the substitutes following those matches, and he hasn’t kicked a ball since then.

Toffees boss Dyche has instead opted to partner veteran James Tarkowski with youngster Jarrad Branthwaite at the back more often than not.

And the duo have formed a strong partnership at the heart of the Everton defence, with Godfrey forced to watch on from the sidelines.

It is certainly a tough moment in the career of the 25-year-old, who may just seek a Goodison Park exit in January given his lack of playing time.

Football is undoubtedly a team game, but Dyche has rarely changed his central defenders, and Godfrey looks certain to warm the bench for the foreseeable future.
