Neal Maupay seems to take swipe at Everton on MOTD after Brentford win

Neal Maupay appears to have taken a swipe at Everton after scoring for Brentford as they beat West Ham on Saturday (4 November).

Speaking on Match of the Day (48:23) after the Bees’ 3-2 victory over the Hammers, the Frenchman admitted that he wasn’t himself with the Toffees last season.

The 27-year-old added that he is “glad to be back” with Brentford to be winning games with people who appreciate him because he loves the West London club.

“Last season I wasn’t me,” said Maupay. “I didn’t manage to find myself at Everton, so I’m glad to be back here, win games and be with people who appreciate me and vice versa because I love people in this club.”

Unnecessary

It feels a bit unnecessary for Maupay to be taking a swipe at Everton despite his time on Merseyside being pretty miserable.

But after earning his loan move back to Brentford and likely to never play for the Toffees again, surely he can just move on now and not look back at his time at Goodison Park.

The Frenchman did come under criticism towards the end with the Blues after scoring just one goal in 32 appearances since making the switch from Brighton in August 2022.

The forward desperately needed a fresh start and to put last season behind him, so it was the best possible scenario for all those involved that he did move on.

But there is no need for him to keep bringing up his unhappiness at his time with the Merseysiders because he doesn’t come across well.
