Everton: New details emerge on unsuccessful attempt to sign player

Everton fell short with a £17.3million (€20m) offer to Coventry City for striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to Record.

The Portuguese outlet shared details on the Toffees’ unsuccessful bid on its online edition, as per the Liverpool Echo’s live blog [6 November, 07:58].

Everton had been strongly linked with Gyokeres in the summer window, but they were beaten to his signature by Sporting CP.

Record claims that Everton offered a package of £17.3m, plus around £2.6m in add-ons, but Coventry were after slightly more in terms of the upfront payment.

Missed out

The fact Gyokeres ended up joining Sporting for a reported £20m [Coventry Live, 13 July] shows just how close Everton were to matching Coventry’s valuation.

Everton then went out and signed Beto for a fee rising to £30m [BBC Sport, 29 August], so there was clearly money there to be spent.

It may well have been that Gyokeres had his heart set on a move to Sporting anyway, given they can offer European football, but this does look like one that got away for the Toffees.

The Sweden international scored and assisted a combined 33 goals in the Championship last season – form he has managed to continue at his new club with 10 direct goal involvements in nine Primeira Liga outings, plus a couple of goals in the Europa League.

Over the small matter of a couple of million pounds, Everton missed out on adding a prolific striker to their squad.
