Pundit likens Everton man to multiple-time Champions League winner

Michael Ball has likened Everton boss Sean Dyche to former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

While he does not say that it’s a direct comparison, he discusses the style of play more than anything and football is a results business.

Mourinho has won two Champions League trophies – one with FC Porto and the other with Inter Milan – both underdog outfits.

Ball told the Liverpool Echo, “I have seen a lot of debate online following Saturday’s game about the way we set up, but for me, the most important thing is that we are getting results.

“Football is a results-driven business and picking up points is important if we are to avoid another relegation battle.

“Even someone like Jose Mourinho has his own style of play, which is to park the bus, as they say, and he deployed that at Real Madrid, but the big difference is that he had Cristiano Ronaldo up front.

“What I am saying is that both managers have their own beliefs about how their sides should be set up to play.”

Similar philosophy

This does not necessarily mean that Dyche is as good as Mourinho but it’s just that their approaches to the game are similar.

Both set their sides up to be extremely hard to beat and obviously, Mourinho’s had world class players to execute his game plan.

He’s often been given the moniker of a chequebook manager for shelling out a lot of money on building his squads.

Dyche, on the other hand, has worked against the odds and has barely spent money to keep his side in the Premier League on countless occasions.

He even got Burnley to qualify for Europe and feature in the play-offs which only tells you how effective his style can be.

He’s certainly better than the likes of Frank Lampard and Rafa Benitez and that’s precisely why the fans are still in support of him.

In other Everton news, the focus will now be on strength and condition as a Toffees player is set to miss the next two games.
