Everton: Amadou Onana confirms ‘Clubs came knocking’ for summer transfer
Amadou Onana has confirmed that clubs approached Everton about a summer transfer, but he rejected all interest to stay at Goodison Park.
The Toffees midfielder arrived in a £33m+ deal from Lille as Frank Lampard’s marquee signing and was one of the best performers in the team, which saw him linked with transfers away to the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea during the summer window.
But Onana has confirmed while speaking to Transfermarkt (13 November), that he turned down interest as he wants to repay the faith shown to him by Everton by giving him a chance in the Premier League.
“Clubs came knocking, but I wanted to stay to develop further and become a top player at Everton, perhaps the best,” he said.
“I try to read almost nothing about it and keep it as far away from me as possible. I just want to concentrate on what’s important.
“Everton gave me the chance to play my first games in the Premier League. I want to repay that.”

Everton have had plenty of problems off the pitch in recent years and have struggled to hold onto our better players too.
Richarlison was sold because of our financial issues, while Anthony Gordon kicked up a fuss about leaving too which saw us forced to sell him too. But times seem to be changing in recent months since Sean Dyche came in.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has returned to the fold regularly, Jarrad Branthwaite put pen to paper on a new contract despite reported interest from elsewhere and now Onana has confirmed he has no intention of going anywhere any time soon either.
It’s a real turn of fortunes and the morale around the club has improved drastically with the team picking up a mightily impressive six wins in their last nine games.
The club is on the rise and with top, young players like Onana committed to the cause the only direction is up for us. Things might finally be turning around.
