Everton loanee Mason Holgate shares ‘disappointment’ at what happened this season
Everton loanee Mason Holgate has revealed it has been “difficult” being in and out of the side at Southampton this season.
Speaking to the Southern Daily Echo on Wednesday (15 November), the 27-year-old admitted that he looks back on his Saints debut against Sunderland with “disappointment” after he was subbed off in the second half of the 5-0 defeat.
The centre-back, who is on a season-long loan with the Championship club, added that all he can do is be prepared for when his chances in the side come along after being named man of the match in their 2-1 victory over West Brom on Saturday (11 November).

“The Sunderland game is one that I look back on with disappointment,” said Holgate. “The same thing goes for the Middlesborough game. It’s difficult as a defender to come in and out of the team.
“All you can do is keep pushing the boys and make sure you are prepared for when that chance comes. There are so many games in the Championship that everyone is going to get their chance to play.”
Return unlikely
It sounds as though Holgate has had a pretty tough start to life with Southampton after failing to really make much of an impression during his opening few games for the club.
The defender has spent the best part of the past couple of months sitting on the bench, having only made five appearances for the Saints.
But he will have been delighted to have been awarded the man of the match for his performance against West Brom at the weekend and will be looking to build on that moving forward.

It’s unlikely that the Englishman will ever feature for the Blues again after Sean Dyche deemed him to be surplus to requirements over the summer.
That means this is a big season for Holgate as he looks to put himself in the shop window and prove that he can be a valuable addition for any interested clubs.
