Simon Jordan: Leeds United, Burnley and Leicester City ‘Wasting their time’ in Everton £300m compensation claim

Simon Jordan believes Leeds, Burnley and Leicester are “wasting their time” chasing Everton for £300m in compensation after their FFP breaches.

The Toffees were hit with a ten-point penalty for breaching profit and sustainability rules, with the ruling claiming that relegated clubs had a 28-day window to bring claims for compensation against the club.

And while on talkSPORT (22 November, 11:51) Jim White asked “how likely is it?” that the five teams are successful in claiming against Everton, with Jordan firm with his answer.

“None,” he said. “Why is the argument limited to four or five clubs? Because there have been nine clubs relegated during that period. So why isn’t there nine clubs coming in?

“And which part of the £20m overspend was spent in which particular season and affected which particular club?

“The conundrum here is that there is a lot of noise in the newspapers about there’s going to be hundreds of millions in potential compensation because of the implications of this. It’s not going to happen. It’s not going to happen.

“You could argue and turn around and say that they were £350m over the limit, and they themselves rounded it down to a certain level. And the independent commission topped it back up and took them over the limit by £20m.”

White then claimed that it’s Burnley and Leicester who have the strongest case of compensation as the ten point penalty being implemented in an earlier season would have seen them avoid relegation, but Jordan was adamant.

“I understand this. But the bottom line is you can’t take the rules and look retrospectively. They can’t [pursue a claim]. Because the rules they’ve signed up to don’t provide for a solution to be taken in instantaneous times.”

Murphy then asked what the clauses would be since the clubs have been given a 28-day window to bring a claim forward.

“Because the tribunal have suggested that they have got a grounds for an argument to be had about compensation,” he answered.

“It’s one thing being given leave to appeal, many people have been given leave to appeal in court cases,” he said. “Iain Dowie was given leave to appeal in a court case against me, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have had his back side smacked again, just because one person wants to abdicate responsibility from closing all avenues.

“I think they’re wasting their time. I think they might get a shakedown.

“I think they might shake down a bit of aggravation and Everton might turn round and say we’ll give you two or three million quid or something of that nature. I do not see this as something that is going to get anywhere near the cost implications of relegation and I’d be gobsmacked if it got even within a whiff of millions of pounds.”

Nonsense

SImon Jordan, for once, is absolutely spot on about this. There is no way they can win a claim against us and everyone with sense should see that.

The ruling admitted that Everton gained no sporting advantage from the breaches, and that should immediately shut down any claims from the other clubs that suggest otherwise.

This is simply them looking for an outside reason to blame on their poor performances in the season they were relegated, and this gives them a chance to boast about it to their fans and get themselves out of hot water.

A “shakedown” is the perfect term for this as they’re going to throw everything at the wall in hopes that something may stick. It won’t and it’s a waste of everyone’s time.

Hopefully, we can get the points deduction reduced at least and then we can move forward and forget this ever happened, planning for the future in the Premier League.
