Gary Lineker lashes out at Farhad Moshiri amid Everton points deduction

Gary Lineker believes it’s the Everton owners who should be punished rather than the players and fans after their 10 point deduction.

The Toffees were docked 10 points for breaching profit and sustainability rules, dropping them down to 19th place in the table after a third of the season.

But Lineker, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast (24 November), admitted that he feels it’s not fair on the fans and players because it’s the owners who have been “making mistakes” that led to the punishment.

“I think if you had said to us at the start of the season that a third of the way through the season Everton would be docked ten points, I think all three of us would have said no chance of them staying up,” he said.

“But they’ve had a good run of form in recent weeks, but will it be enough? Because they need another good run of form now to get out of the bottom three. Can they do it? It would be a hell of an achievement if they can do it.

“Obviously having played for Everton I have an affinity towards that club, I really hope they do it. Because when things like this happen it’s the owners, the people in charge of the club making mistakes but it’s the players and the fans who suffer and they’ve done nothing wrong.”

Bingo

Lineker knows this club better than most in the media after spending time here during his playing career, and he knows how much the club means to the surrounding community.

Everton is the people’s club in Liverpool, but it’s the fans who have been hit the hardest from this punishment because Farhad Moshiri doesn’t want to be here and won’t be here to pick up the pieces from the mess he caused as owner.

Everton

Once he sells up to 777 Partners or anyone else he’ll never step foot in Merseyside again and will forget all about us, while we are forced to deal with the punishments and issues he caused with his reckless spending and stupid decision making.

But the Premier League and independent commission don’t care either. They just want to be seen to be making a stand and they’ve chosen to make an example of us in this instance.

If we stay up it’ll be huge for the club, but it won’t solve all our problems overnight. We need Moshiri out ASAP and new, proper owners in who care about the future of this great club.
