Newcastle United star Callum Wilson speaks out about Everton points deduction in BBC podcast

Callum Wilson has shared his own experience of being a player at a club who have been handed a points deduction, as he insisted Everton can use the punishment to ignite their season.

The Newcastle striker shared memories of his time at Coventry when the club went into administration, sharing how they quickly picked up points and moved into the top ten in the league.

Wilson suggested that if Everton keep their heads down and focus on the pitch they can earn their points back quicker than it may seem.

Wilson was speaking on the Footballers’ Football Podcast [24 November] where he shared: “I’ve actually been in a dressing room that’s had a 10-point deduction. I was at Coventry at the time, we went into administration.

“By the end of September, I think it was, we were in positive equity in points. Before we knew it, we were in the top ten in the league, so it just shows that something like that could spark your season. That might be what they need to ignite it.”

Players need to stay focused

Wilson has become the latest to speak out on the incident and claim that, if the players can remain focused on their performances, they will be able to pull themselves out of the situation and earn their points back through merit on the pitch.

With plenty of uproar off the pitch surrounding the decision, it will be difficult for the players not to get sucked into the madness and noise surrounding the club, but Sean Dyche will be working hard to keep the players focused and performing.

Everton’s displays so far this season can serve as proof that they will be able to get those points back regardless of the expected appeal of the decision, with the Toffees in great form despite their now lowly league position.

With the teams around them also struggling, it should still be in sight for Everton to climb out of the relegation zone and make a go of the season and, as Wilson shared in his experience, perhaps even push into the top half of the league in the months to come.

In other Everton news, Eddie Howe has also commented on the decision.
