Finance Expert shares Everton relegation prediction after 10-point deduction as ‘unlikely’ verdict shared

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton

Dan Plumley believes it is “unlikely” that Everton will have their 10-point deduction completely overturned, predicting a reduction on the points deduction as the club’s “line of attack” in their appeal.

The Toffees received an immediate 10-point deduction on 17 November after being found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules [BBC Sport].

The Merseyside outfit dropped from 14th place to 19th place in the league table upon receiving the points deduction.

“I get the sense that given everything else that’s in the mix, and the fact that independent regulation is looming in the game at the top – the Premier League are trying to move first on that and regulate and say that they can sanction and start to show their teeth a little bit – with all the other things we’ve got going on in the mix, I just feel it’s unlikely it would get completely overturned,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“So I think on appeal, you’re probably looking at a reduction on the points sanction that would be what the club would be hoping for as a best-case scenario. And I think that will be the line of attack for Everton in the appeal.

“We know that over the last two years there were problems here and we know that the breach should have been managed sooner, and I think if you look at 10-point deduction over the last couple of seasons, that probably relegates the club.

“This season they’ve probably got a fairly decent chance of survival because of the other teams that are in the mix. I think it’s another really interesting subplot in all of this that we’re perhaps not paying enough attention to.

“My belief is that they’ll stay up even with a 10-point deduction, but I don’t think that would have been the case perhaps the two years prior to this one.”

In other Everton news, Peter Reid has shared what drove him “mad” about the 10-point deduction handed to the Toffees.
