David Ornstein shares chance of Everton point deduction being increased

David Ornstein has shared the chances of Everton seeing their points deduction increased during their appeal process against then 10 points penalty.

The Toffees were hit with the punishment after breaching profit and sustainability rules, but are due to appeal against it on Friday (1 December) to get points reinstated.

But when asked during a Q&A on The Athletic (30 November) if their punishment could in fact be increased, Ornstein said he would not expect that outcome at all.

“The independent commission did not rule that Everton deliberately tried to cheat the rules, David,” he wrote.

“The club admitted their breach and will tomorrow (1 December) submit an appeal against the verdict, in an attempt to wipe or reduce the points deduction.

“Given that and the fact such a penalty was already unprecedented, I would not expect it to be increased.”

No way

The Premier League initially briefed the media that they wanted a 12-point penalty, but it now seems like that was just so the 10 point penalty didn’t look so hefty when it came out.

But the football world reacted terribly towards it, with the general consensus being that it was way too severe a punishment and completely disproportionate to the crime.

Everton worked alongside the Premier League to avoid these charges and they were somehow still brought on them, and most people seem to think that upon appeal the punishment will be reduced slightly at best.

The club admitted a breach and therefore a punishment will certainly happen, meaning points off the board will be lost, but 10 is too many.

If an independent commission somehow decided that 10 wasn’t enough then the backlash and uproar would be insane, so there is surely no chance of that happening.
