Amadou Onana breaks silence over Everton Premier League points deduction, everyone ‘feels a sense of injustice’

Amadou Onana has broken his silence after Everton were deducted 10 points for breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Sean Dyche’s side slipped into the relegation zone after an Independent Commission decided to deduct the Toffees ten points (Sky Sports, 17 November) after they were found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s rules.

The Toffees midfielder, speaking to The Athletic (1 December) admits that everything was going well behind the scenes at the club, even in comparison to last season, before the announcement was made and that everyone around the club feels a sense of injustice.

He said: “Things were going pretty well before we got hit with the points deduction — way better than last season.

“The mindset and the atmosphere around the team is much healthier. That’s also because of the results, which are the best since I came in. We’re building every single week. We’ve got loads of new signings and competition between players, which keeps everyone on their toes. It’s very healthy. That’s the main difference between this season and the last.

“Everyone at the club feels a sense of injustice, but our focus hasn’t changed — which is to keep improving on the pitch and to continue producing more consistent performances.”

Rallying cry

Everton fans and everyone around Goodison Park will certainly be feeling a sense of injustice right now as the Premier League were always likely to make an example of them.

No one will be more disappointed at Everton than Dyche with this dreadful development. After such stark and encouraging progress in recent weeks, the Blues have literally been kicked back down to earth by the independent commission.

Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri can admit some blame for what’s happened and surely deserves some form of punishment for his incompetence in recent years but the fact that Dyche and his team are having to brent much of the flack is treacherous.

Ten points is incredibly harsh and excessive but there’s not much that Dyche and his players can do but pull their socks up and attempt to complete an almighty escape from the Premier League drop zone.

In all fairness, it may be a lot easier given the struggles of those around them in the table, in comparison to their own recent form.

Onana is spot on with his rallying cry, the only way the Toffees can get out of this mess is by working hard together and producing on the pitch as a result.
