Kevin Thelwell shares new Everton-777 Partners takeover verdict

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell has insisted he is not sure how long talks over the potential takeover by 777 Partners are going to take, in a new admission ahead of the January transfer window.

Thelwell suggested that the club’s January transfer plans would depend on whether the takeover is finalised before the window opened, a timeline which he could not clarify.

He did, however, reassure fans that they would do everything they could to try to improve the team and are planning for every eventuality ahead of the transfer window.

Speaking on the VSI Sporting Directors’ Podcast [5 December], Thelwell was asked about whether the club will spend money in January, as he shared: “We are in the middle of a takeover, and we’re not quite sure how long that takeover is going to take.

“I’m not quite sure what the answer is to that, but we have to plan for every eventuality, so the one thing that they [the fans] can depend on is we are going to be looking at every circumstance to see if there’s a way we can improve the team.”

No further clarity

It has been over 12 weeks since Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his majority stake in Everton to 777 Partners and we are still no clearer in our knowledge of when, or even if, the takeover will be completed.

At least it appears that the club are equally as starved of information as everybody else, suggesting it is just dragging on longer than expected rather than anything being hidden or kept from public knowledge, with Thelwell also unsure of the potential timeframe.

As far as January transfers go, Everton will need to continue to work within their limits – particularly with those limits now under special scrutiny after the ten-point deduction was handed to them due to breaches of Profit and Sustainability rules.

A promise to fans in reassurance that they will try to do everything possible to support Sean Dyche in January will be a welcome one, but it remains to be seen whether it is something Thelwell and his team can act upon in the coming months.
