Finance Expert sticks neck out with new January update at Everton

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton

Dan Plumley has predicted a fairly quiet January transfer window at Everton with the potential for nothing to be spent at all at Goodison Park.

The finance expert admitted to sticking his neck out in a “critical” new verdict where the Toffees could possibly spend if they were to sell a couple of players.

The financial situation of the club paired with the 10-point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability regulations in the Premier League makes any new activity unlikely at this stage.

“I would suggest logically that it does,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“Never say never in football, but I would say it’s unlikely that we will see Everton spending a considerable amount of money in the January window, if anything at all given the financial situation, given the deduction.

As I say, never say never in football and you never know how these clubs are going to operate, it will become critical in terms of a relegation picture.

Again, you can look at running the finances of that and the trade-off, we know that relegation is going to wipe about £60million off the revenue line overnight, so there is the financial risk and the sporting risk laid bare, but given the financial situation and the points deduction, are they in a position to spend? Probably not.

If you sell a couple, can you bring in? Maybe.

I still think it’s unlikely given everything going on and it should certainly affect the decision-making, but never say never, we’ve seen clubs do some things that defy business logic a lot of the time.

It will be an interesting one but I think, sticking my neck out, you would expect a fairly quiet window at Everton given everything that is going on.”
