Finance Expert reacts to player compensation twist at Everton

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton

Dan Plumley has insisted that he can understand Everton players potentially seeking compensation if they are relegated after the club were found guilty of breaching Premier League rules.

It comes after Alan Nixon reported on 3 December that Everton players are looking into potential compensation claims should the club be relegated and their wages be slashed in “massive” cuts.

Everton are currently flying on the pitch though, and are now four points clear of the relegation zone with Plumley calling for wage clauses to be put in all contracts to avoid situations like this.

“This might be one more thing to worry about further down the track,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“I think a lot of this nowadays, irrespective of points deductions and I can understand the argument of players maybe claiming compensation against something that is not their fault if they have to take a wage cut.

More wider than that, I can’t understand why player wage reductions and bonuses the other way are not built into contracts as standard, that can account for points deductions and all manner of things.

We really should be getting to a point where clubs have got that in their contracts as that protects the clubs, and the players know exactly what they signed up for and if you get promoted and you’re gaining in the financial gap then absolutely reward the players, but it has to work the other way.

I think the problem over the last few years with football is a lot of the clubs haven’t done that and we should be getting to a point where that is standard in player contracts.

It’s getting there, but if it is not in place at Everton, it perhaps should have been and certainly should be moving forward.”
