Everton Women star Aurora Galli stuns commentator with astonishing goal v Manchester City

Everton Women star Aurora Galli stunned Sky Sports commentator Adam Inker as she fired a long-range strike past Khiara Keating to score against Manchester City.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Everton as they fell to a Khadija Shaw hattrick, her second of the season, and a Jill Roord strike in a 4-1 loss at Walton Hall Park.

Galli did, however, give the home fans a moment to savour with her goal to make it 3-1 at the time and provide some inspiration to an out-of-sorts Everton Women’s side.

Commentating on the game live for Sky Sports [17 December], Inker exclaimed: “Away by Asagawa, only as far as Galli who will strike. Oh, what a hit. That is astonishing from Aurora Galli.

“Against the best defence in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Galli does this.”

A bright moment in a dark season

It has been a season to forget so far as 2023 comes to a close for Everton Women in the WSL. Sitting in seventh place as things stand, they have lost five of their opening ten games, including heavy defeats to Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

It was a particularly poor spell for the side between October and November, when they conceded 16 goals in four games, with 12 of those coming against Manchester United first in the league and then the FA WSL Cup.

However, since the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on 12 November, Brian Sorensen’s side picked up a run of form. A point against Bristol City left fans frustrated, before back-to-back away wins against Aston Villa and West Ham gave them something to cheer about.

The ultimate heavy defeat to Manchester City was always on the cards, especially with Shaw’s goalscoring form, but the strike from Galli gave fans something to cheer to keep spirits high over the Christmas period.
