Everton fans must quickly forgive Amadou Onana after Fulham nightmare as leading statistic emerges

Everton supporters were understandably in high spirits before their EFL Cup clash against Premier League rivals Fulham.

The West London club travelled to Goodison Park for a quarter-final meeting under the lights on Tuesday (19 December).

And Marco Silva came back to haunt his former side in the end, with the Cottagers winning 7-6 on penalties after the match ended 1-1.

Toffees midfielders Idrissa Gueye and Amadou Onana were the unfortunate duo to miss their spot-kicks, although the latter will perhaps be feeling more guilty than the former given his effort inside the box.

The Belgian international stepped up confidently, knowing a successful penalty would secure a semi-final spot for Everton.

But it wasn’t meant to be, with the midfielder sending a weak effort towards goal that was easily saved by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Onana will rue his poor decision for some time, as will Everton supporters, but they must try and forgive the midfield ace as soon as possible given his recent efforts under Sean Dyche.

As per Squawka (19 December), the Toffees star has the highest duel success rate of any midfielder to win 10 or more duels in the Premier League this season. The 22-year-old Belgian has contested 145 duels, winning 99 of them at a success rate of 68.3%.

He has been key to the club’s recent upturn in form, with Dyche guiding the Merseyside club to four successive Premier League victories.

They now have the chance to make it five in a row when they travel to North London to take on Tottenham on Saturday (23 December).

In other Everton news, a BBC Sport journalist has shared a “hero to villain” verdict on one Toffees ace after their EFL Cup loss to Fulham.
