Ian Wright issues admission on controversial incident in Everton loss v Tottenham

Ian Wright has reacted to what Sean Dyche said about the controversy in the Everton v Tottenham Hotspur clash on Saturday, 23 December.

The Toffees manager said that Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed goal should have stood as he watched his side suffer a 2-1 loss to Ange Postecoglou’s team.

However, the referee decided Andre Gomes committed a foul in the build up and did not allow the goal to stand.

Speaking on Premier League Productions (23 December, 20:41), Wright said: “I think Sean Dyche was right. For the team going down 2-0, to show that fight. I think they were unlucky. To have a perfectly good goal being disallowed will hurt.”

Dyche and Wright’s comments resonate with many football enthusiasts, emphasising the need for a balanced approach in the implementation of technology.

The Toffees manager’s assertion that VAR over-refereed the moment, overturning the on-field decision based on minimal contact, reflects a growing concern about the frequency of soft decisions impacting the game.

Despite the disappointment, Everton should take the positives from the match and Dyche has rightly commended his team’s outstanding performance, creating chances and posing a threat on the counter.

After a bad 20 minutes, the Toffees demonstrated resilience, tactical awareness and the ability to trouble the hosts.

There were a few players who did not perform up to their expectations but this certainly does not mean that Dyche’s plan was ineffective.

Hopefully, his players bounce back and are fully focused when they take on Manchester City on 27 December as that’s going to be a tough one to get something from.

In other Everton news, a club shareholder has gone on record to slam a “terrible” development surrounding the Toffees and has made an admission on Sean Dyche.
