Sky Sports journalist speculates Andre Gomes January transfer window ‘flex’ in Everton v Tottenham

Sky Sports journalist Ben Grounds has speculated a January transfer window “flex” from Everton man Andre Gomes.

It comes after the midfielder scored on his first appearance of the season against Tottenham on Saturday (23 December).

The North London club won the match 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Gomes netting late on after coming on as a first-half substitute.

“A January shop window flex or a very positive reboot of his Everton career, his first league goal since February 2019 and overall display will certainly provide Sean Dyche with a crumb of comfort as he saw his side’s recent winning run ended,” Grounds wrote for Sky Sports.

Impressive

Gomes has not been seen in Dyche’s setup since being named as a substitute on the opening day of the Premier League season against Fulham.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the 30-year-old, who has looked like exiting Goodison Park for some time now.

But he may just have played his way into Dyche’s thoughts with his performance and goal against Tottenham. The midfielder entered the pitch after just 24 minutes for the injured Idrissa Gueye.

The latter is set to leave Merseyside for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, giving Gomes an even bigger chance of getting more minutes on the pitch.

He played a key role as Everton fought for a vital point on the road, but it wasn’t meant to be thanks to early goals from Son Heung-min and former Goodison Park ace Richarlison.

Dyche will be upset that the club’s impressive league run has come to an end, but the boss can still take plenty of comfort from the overall performance against Tottenham.

In other Everton news, Darren Bent is “surprised” that “bigger clubs” have not made a move for one “brilliant” Toffees player.
