Everton transfer twist emerges in Newcastle United hunt to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City

Newcastle United are aware of competition from Everton, Juventus and Crystal Palace in their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper reported via their website on 27 December that Newcastle are hopeful they can agree on a loan deal for the midfielder when the January transfer window opens, and want to get it done swiftly amid pressure from elsewhere.

It is also reported that Phillips would be open to a move to St James’ Park, but will seek assurances of his playing time as he looks to secure his place in the England squad ahead of Euro 2024.

Everton should make their intentions clear

If the Toffees are a suitor for Phillips, they should move quickly to make their intentions clear. A guarantee of first-team football where he could walk in as one of the best players at the club could prove an appealing option to the Manchester City midfielder.

However, if Newcastle are allowed a free run at the deal, their higher league position and aims to challenge for European qualification could prove a difference-maker in negotiations to convince Phillips a move to the North East would suit him best.

Everton will need to get things done quickly if they want to secure the deal ahead of Newcastle, although the Magpies’ confidence in landing the deal does not look good as far as the transfer chiefs at Goodison Park are concerned.

To bring in an England international who can provide additional quality and depth to the midfield in Sean Dyche’s side could have a huge impact on Everton’s battle for survival after their ten-point deduction landed them in trouble, although a strong run of form has pulled them away from the drop zone.
