Everton cannot compete in Conor Gallagher battle as leaders named in January race

In a different world things might have played out differently for Everton when it comes to Conor Gallagher.

Almost a year ago, Sky Sports (30 Jan, 2023) reported the Toffees had agreed to pay £40million plus add-ons to Chelsea to sign the England midfielder.

The move never happened, though, and Gallagher’s future at Stamford Bridge remains the topic of hot debate heading into the January transfer window.

Gallagher has been a regular for Mauricio Pochettino but Chelsea are reportedly ready to sell him because of the need to comply with Financial Fair Play rules and to finance any further transfers.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday (27 December) that Tottenham are monitoring the situation most closely, with West Ham interested too.

TEAMTALK (28 December) concurred, naming Tottneham as the leaders in the race for his signature. They also named Manchester United, the Hammers, and Everton as those monitoring the situation.

But the reported £40m price tag surely prices the Toffees out of going back in for Gallagher. Would he be an excellent addition? Absolutely he would.

However, Everton still need to box clever in the transfer market given the perilous state of their finances. And with some big hitters keeping tabs on him then there is just no way Everton can compete.

Sean Dyche could certainly do with reinforcements next month, but don’t count on one of them being Gallagher.

In other Everton news, two players have been ruled to face Wolves by Sean Dyche.
