Manchester City transfer news as Everton want Alex Robertson ahead of January

Everton are interested in Manchester City loanee Alex Robertson amid a breakthrough season with Portsmouth, according to The News.

The newspaper reported via its website [30 December] that the Toffees are closely monitoring the 20-year-old’s progress at League One leaders Portsmouth, who are hoping to keep him until the end of the season.

Although Man City have an option to end his season-long loan early, Portsmouth are confident that they can keep the Australian international at Fratton Park until the end of the campaign and are hoping to have him back on loan next season.

With the aim of developing the player with loan deals, Man City will require Portsmouth to be promoted to the Championship for Robertson to return to the club next season.

However, it remains to be seen as to whether the current Premier League champions have Robertson in their plans or if he will be sold on for “big money” like some of his former teammates.

One to watch.

Since joining on loan this summer, Robertson has become a fan-favourite at Fratton Park. The midfielder has missed just two of Portsmouth’s 24 league games so far this season, starting 19.

He has tallied up one goal and three assists in that time, also getting stuck into the action with eight yellow cards. Robertson is still a very raw talent and will need a lot more experience if he is to become a Man City senior player one day.

But there is definitely potential there with the player, hence Everton’s early interest in him. Even at such a young age, Robertson has been capped by his national team twice, coming in international friendlies against Ecuador and Argentina.

Man City fans will be worried about the young star’s future at the club, with the Citizens having a future of selling on a few of their prospects, such as Cole Palmer to Chelsea, Gavin Bazunu to Southampton and James Trafford to Burnley.

Everton fans will be licking their lips at the idea of the Toffees going in for Robertson during the January transfer window, but it may take a significant bid if it is a permanent move they are interested in.
