Everton recall option twist emerges for Southampton loanee Mason Holgate – Paul Joyce
Everton do not have a recall option in the loan deal with Southampton for defender Mason Holgate, according to The Times journalist Paul Joyce.
Writing on their website (3 January), the Toffees have been linked with terminating the 27-year-old’s move at St Mary’s after he failed to break into their first-team since joining in the summer.
But despite claims Everton could terminate the deal, Joyce reports there is no recall option in the deal suggesting he may end up staying put with the Championship club.

“Everton do not have a recall option on Mason Holgate, who is on loan at Southampton but has played only 289 minutes,” he wrote.
Awkward
It’s pretty clear that there is no future for Holgate at Goodison Park, but he would have been hoping that he would be able to return in the second half of the season and potentially head back out elsewhere.
But it now seems that the only way that will be happening is if Southampton are able to find a replacement for him first and then terminate the deal on their end, with Everton not too bothered by what happens.

If he returns it would obviously mean that the club would have to pay his wages in full once again or find another team to take him on the same terms Southampton had him on, but his lack of performances there are unlikely to encourage any bidders to step forward.
The situation is seemingly out of the club’s control at this point and that is never a good position to be in when it comes to the transfer window.
