Ally McCoist blasts ‘Shocking’ Craig Pawson decision in Everton draw v Crystal Palace
Ally McCoist has admitted that he felt the decision to send off Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was “shocking” while on commentary for ITV.
Calvert-Lewin was given a straight red card during the FA Cup 3rd round clash with Crystal Palace for a tackle that made minimal contact on Nathaniel Clyne following a VAR review, which has been hugely criticised in the aftermath of the game.
And while on commentary for the clash between Sunderland and Newcastle live ITV Sport (6 January, 12:35), McCoist gave his verdict on the decision with Craig Pawson in charge after his VAR duty in the Everton game.
“They eventually came to the totally wrong decision didn’t they?” he said. “Lets be honest about it.
“I’m just thinking that you looked at me there as if I was going to complain about no VAR. I’m actually waving my hands and cheering.
“No they got that one wrong, that was a shocking decision wasn’t it really, I thought.”
Crazy
We’re days later from the incident now and we’re yet to see a single person who even pretends to believe that Calvert-Lewin deserved to be sent off for his tackle at Selhurst Park.
It wasn’t dangerous, it wasn’t reckless, it wasn’t out of control and it was barely even a foul nevermind a straight red card and a three-game ban. It was so bad that Stan Collymore called it “mind-boggling”.

The FA need to hold their hands up and admit that their shocking officials have made yet another shocking error and put it right by rescinding the card and allowing Calvert-Lewin to play again for Everton immediately.
Thankfully the decision didn’t cost us too much on the night with the game ending 0-0, but it does mean there is another game on our fixture list now where had our best striker been on the pitch we may have been able to nick a result.
That’s all whataboutery however, and ultimately the officials and those in charge need to find a way to ensure this type of thing doesn’t happen anymore as it’s becoming far too common.
