Sky Sports provide new Everton January transfer update after ‘noises from the club’

Noises from within Everton suggest that the club will need to sell players in order to facilitate incoming January transfer business, according to Sky Sports.

The news outlet shared via their transfer blog [10 January, 12:36] that it will be tricky for Everton to get any transfer business done in January as a result of their ongoing financial situation.

However, the report also reassured fans that their precarious league position means the club’s transfer team is looking to see if any deals can be done this month.

Sell to buy can be dangerous

The fact Everton will have to sell players to buy new ones in this transfer window doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what they will do. They have sellable assets in the form of Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite, but they are unlikely to be allowed to leave.

The two star players could fetch a combined £160million fee according to reports, and a deal for either player would allow Everton plenty of room to move in the transfer market, but it would also see their squad significantly weakened.

When the club were in a similarly perilous league position last winter, they were the only club in the Premier League not to make a January signing despite the arrival of Sean Dyche, and the boss managed to keep them up regardless.

To keep relying on Dyche’s ability to work miracles is, of course, a dangerous route to take, but whether a lack of signings in January is worth holding onto their key players, Branthwaite and Onana in particular will be what the club chiefs will have to weigh up.

In other Everton news, the club have hired a “super” new lawyer in their fight with the Premier League.
