Everton facing another farcical PSR scenario as Premier League update shared

Everton are facing another farcical scenario regarding profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR) punishments if an update by The Athletic is anything to go by.

The online publication reported on Thursday (11 January) that Premier League clubs may not learn of any PSR sanctions until after the season is over.

In wake of Everton being docked 10 points earlier this season for an offence committed in a previous campaign, all 20 clubs were asked to submit their annual accounts by 31 December.

That, we were told, would then allow the Premier League to potentially dock points from any team – or teams – found guilty of breaches as early as next week to avoid a similar scenario.

However, clubs will then have two weeks to respond to a charge and, according to The Athletic, a date of 24 May has been pencilled in as a backstop date for any appeal(s) – one week after the season ends.

It means that a team can finish in the relegation zone and yet stay up, or indeed vice-versa in that they think they have avoided the drop, only to learn their actual fate the following week while everyone is away on holiday.

Given Everton are embroiled in a relegation scrap, and every point really could make the difference, it is fair to say this is far from an ideal scenario.

The hope now is that Everton, as is expected, do not face any further points deductions and that they can focus simply on the task at hand.

If any relegation rivals are hit by the punishment, though, then nobody will know what is actually needed to avoid relegation until seven days after the curtain comes down on the campaign.

In other Everton news, a report has shared the Toffees’ stance with regards to a player who could be on his way out of Goodison Park.
