Everton: Late January exit now on the cards for Ben Godfrey as Italian transfer news emerges

Everton defender Ben Godfrey could join Serie A side Roma on loan for the remainder of the season, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper reported in its print edition (page 15, 12 January) that Jose Mourinho’s side are keen on adding defensive reinforcements and could look to make a move for Godfrey toward the end of January.

Everton are willing to let the 25-year-old leave the club on loan and must now wait to see what Roma decide to do.

Everton

The Englishman, who has 2 caps for his country, has played just twice in the Premier League this season.

Get it done

This is a move which makes sense for everybody involved. Godfrey will be keen to get some regular game time under his belt and playing in Italy for a side still in Europe and led by a legendary coach such as Mourinho will certainly be an attractive proposition for the centre-back.

Godfrey has started just one Premier League match this season and was only handed one start in the Carabao Cup before being dropped for the next three rounds.

He is clearly surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, with Sean Dyche hardly offering him an opportunity, and there is no point keeping the player around if he is not part of the manager’s plans, especially in the case of the Toffees.

Everton

Everton have a pile of financial problems and clearing wages off the bill would certainly help ease some pressure, even if only very minimally. They will likely be hoping that Roma make a move, and must now wait to see what the Italian club decide to do.

In other Everton news, one player linked with a move to Goodison has issued transfer admission.
