Andy Burnham provides update on Everton Premier League appeal after government delays

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has claimed that the Everton points-deduction appeal should be debated in parliament by the summer amid further delays from the government.

Burnham shared with the Everton Fan Advisory Board [14 January] that the recent Post Office legislation being pushed through had meant the bill had already been pushed back.

However, should the debate begin in February, Burnham expects the bill to be through before the summer break, providing a new timeline for fans to expect any government intervention on the Premier League appeal.

Speaking to the Everton Fan Advisory Board [14 January], “There are no guarantees is all I would say. The government at any point could decide something else is a priority – as I understand it, this bill has already been delayed by the Post Office legislation that’s going through.

“But, as it stands given the cross-party support, this bill should be through by the summer recess if it’s introduced in February.”

Things starting to take shape

With Everton set to undergo their appeal process in an attempt to have their ten-point deduction overturned, or at least reduced given their outrage at the severity of the punishment, things finally look to be starting to take shape with regard to the process and a timeline.

Financial news outlet Reuters reported on 21 November that Labour MP Ian Byrne had called for an independent regulator to be established in the Premier League in the wake of the points deduction handed to Everton.

With an independent regulator looking more and more likely to be installed, it is unlikely it would have an effect on the appeal process at Goodison Park due to the timeframe involved, but it would prevent future decisions of this sort from happening in the Premier League.

Things are speeding up surrounding the appeal process, and while there is no further clarity, the appeals and complaints from the fans will continue as they make their voices heard against the Premier League.
