Finance Expert instantly reacts to brand new Premier League charge at Everton
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...
Dan Plumley has suggested the latest charge against Everton for an alleged breach of Profit and Sustainability rules has shown up deficiencies in Premier League rules.
The Premier League confirmed on Monday (15 January) that the Toffees and Nottingham Forest have both been charged and referred to an independent commission (David Ornstein).
It has been claimed that the Toffees – who have already been docked 10 points this season – flouted the competition’s rules with their latest financial accounts.

Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan posted on X to say Everton will appeal against the latest charge, while their challenge for the previous punishment is still to be heard.
Finance expert Plumley – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – says it is too early to know if another points deduction is forthcoming and Everton’s case is particularly complicated.
“This is a really tricky situation and we haven’t had much by way of a detailed statement from the Premier League right now.
Everton are pressing hard against this charge stating deficiencies in the EPL rules regarding the absence of guidelines which prevent a club being sanctioned for alleged breaches in financial periods which have already been subject to punishment (unlike other governing bodies including the EFL).

“As such, they find themselves in the difficult position of being charged for breaches that have occurred in some of the time period they have already been punished for (appeal pending, of course).
“It really is in the EPL hands as to how much they want to push this but they could dock more points if the independent commission makes a case for it.
“The ultimate backstop date for any appeals is also after the season ends so that creates a messy situation in terms of the sporting integrity of the competition.
“Really tough to say if they will be docked further points as it stands right now and a charge is by no means a straight shot in terms of punishment so the club will no doubt be pushing for mitigation given their current circumstances.“
In other Everton news, a brand new points deduction is apparently on the cards.
