Roy Keane makes Harry Kane comparison in ‘top class’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin verdict in Everton v Aston Villa

Roy Keane has claimed Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not a top-class striker with a comparison to England captain Harry Kane after he missed an opportunity to score in the 0-0 Everton draw against Aston Villa.

The former Manchester United midfielder did praise Calvert-Lewin for getting into the position and making the run but insisted he had to score that chance which could have proved decisive.

Jamie Redknapp was also critical of the Everton striker, although his analysis lent praise to Emi Martinez for denying Calvert-Lewin the goal which would have put the Toffees ahead.

Redknapp was speaking live on Sky Sports [15:09] as he commented: “It was great movement as well. He’s got a massive part of the goal to the keeper’s right, he tried to reverse it into the corner.

“It’s a brilliant save, you see his big right foot comes out there. He made a save like this in the World Cup final, he’s a big-game keeper.”

Keane then responded with the rhetorical question: “Does Kane score that?” Before his assessment that: “A top-class striker would score that. Keep making those runs, though.”

Calvert-Lewin needs to step up soon

Despite all of the optimism towards him when he made his long-awaited return from injury at the start of the season, the recent performances from Everton’s number nine have been nothing short of a disappointment at Goodison Park.

Failing to find the net against Aston Villa means his run has now extended to 13 games without a goal, despite starting the majority of games under Sean Dyche with 14 of his 17 Premier League appearances coming from the start.

He was looked to as the saviour for Everton’s season after a difficult start, but bar a purple patch upon his return which saw him find the net four times in six games between 23 September and 29 October, the striker has done little to help the cause.

With Beto waiting on the bench, it is surely only a matter of time until Dyche changes things, as Calvert-Lewin cannot go on missing golden chances like this one while also failing to affect the game with his presence as he is easily dealt with by opposition defenders.
