Jamie Carragher destroys Farhad Moshiri and Everton in Premier League ‘corruption’ verdict

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Farhad Moshiri and the previous Everton board members, blaming them for the situation the club finds itself in and calling on fans to redirect their anger in his column for The Telegraph.

The former Liverpool defender stated on 17 January that the mess at Goodison Park is not of the Premier League’s making, but the fault of Moshiri, who he names as one of the worst-ever Premier League owners.

He also insisted that there is no conspiracy or corruption from the Premier League against Everton or any club, with the clubs the ones to decide on rules including profit and sustainability.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph [17 January], Carragher shared: “Everton’s mess is not of the Premier League’s making. Ultimate responsibility for another charge for overspending, having already been docked 10 points, lies at the door of their outgoing owner Farhad Moshiri.

“Moshiri’s legacy is a shambles. The crisis engulfing the club is down to him and yet his silence – and that of some of his former Goodison executives – is deafening.

“There is no grand conspiracy targeting any club, and I am not comfortable with the word ‘corruption’ being chucked around in the Everton case. The Premier League clubs decide and vote in their own rules, including those on Profit and Sustainability.”

Carragher has a point

While it might not be ideal to hear, particularly with the level of anger directed towards the Premier League, it is Moshiri and the board that should be getting both barrels from Everton fans rather than those who are simply enforcing the rules.

At the end of the day, constant allegations of corruption against the Premier League are baseless. The Manchester City case is complicated and therefore will take longer, while Forest will likely receive the same punishment as Everton did for the same breach.

There is no grand conspiracy against Everton, although sometimes it may feel like that. The owners have run this club into the ground with no regard for what their overspending would do to the club and to the fans.

It is them the anger should be directed at. Moshiri and his former board, who have so far been allowed to sit silently and watch the situation unfold. The situation they put the club in with their terrible decisions and ownership over the past few years.
