Everton: Alan Stubbs rages at latest Goodison Park controversy as Premier League verdict shared
Alan Stubbs has raged at the Premier League following the decision to hand out fresh charges to Everton.
Speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside’s Total Sport programme on Friday (19 January, via BBC Sport), the pundit admitted there seems to be a “huge cloud” over everything to do with the league, highlighting VAR and the profit and sustainability regulations as areas where no one is clear on what they are supposed to be doing.
He was baffled by the fact that the Premier League, which has turned into a “huge, worldwide monster” in terms of its brand, hasn’t changed its financial rules in 10 years since the regulations preventing clubs from losing more than £105million over a three-year cycle was implemented in February 2013.
“There seems like there is a huge cloud over everything to do with the Premier League, whether it is VAR, whether it is profit and sustainability regulations, no one is clear exactly what they are supposed to be doing,” said Stubbs.
“They say the rules are there but then rules are being changed during the season. It makes you wonder because it hasn’t been changed since 2013, so that is 10 years of the Premier League where it has turned into this huge, worldwide monster with the brand.
“However, the Premier League itself hasn’t chosen to change [the rules] even though they know it wasn’t right. Over 10 years? It beggars belief.”
Needs a rethink
The rules clearly need a rethink because football – and the associated costs – have changed dramatically over the past 10 years and the regulations have become outdated.
There is no hiding from the fact that Everton did break those rules and they admitted their guilt, but the Premier League must work with them to try and ensure this doesn’t happen again.
With Nottingham Forest also being charged with breaching the spending rules, it’s likely that more clubs will exceed the limit in the years to come.

The initial 10-point deduction handed out to the Toffees in November was seen by many as a harsh decision, but another similar punishment could prove to be the nail in the coffin for the club.
It just feels as though something has to give and the governing body needs to start working with clubs more to ensure these things don’t happen again in the future.
