Jim White reacts live on talkSPORT to what Brighton chief Paul Barber said about Everton controversy
Jim White has reacted to what Paul Barber said about the charges being handed out to Everton and Nottingham Forest for breaching the Premier League’s spending rules.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday (18 January), the Brighton chief executive said the top-flight sides know the rules and that they need to push themselves to be the best they can be while balancing the books, but he also sympathised with the fans and the people working at the clubs in question.
Responding to those comments on talkSPORT on Friday (19 January, 11:08am), host White said it would be “foolish” for any club to not be right across the implications of FFP after seeing what’s happening at Goodison Park.
“One thing I take from that is that Paul Barber, who I’m quite sure recognised the threat of a points deduction being very real for clubs who don’t pay heed to FFP and everything that goes with it,” said White. “But it would be foolish for any club to not be right across the implications of FFP at this stage when you see what’s going on at Everton.
“10-point deduction already, another might be on the way and a third might be on the way. When you see that Nottingham Forest are in the conversation and we know that Manchester City for some time now have been in the conversation, Paul Barber is saying you’ve got to be across it, the threat is real.”
Warning
The punishment that has already been handed out to Everton has likely sent a warning to other Premier League clubs about their spending in the future.
During the current transfer window, it already appears to have had an impact on proceedings as just about all of the sides are reluctant to spend any money.
Unfortunately for the Toffees, they look to be the team who are being used to send out that warning about what will happen to clubs if they don’t toe the right side of the line.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion on the matter, it does feel as though the decisions are being taken without thinking of the people who will be affected most, and that’s the supporters.
Owners, board members, managers and players all come and go, but it will be the fans who are the ones left to pick up the pieces if the current situation puts the Blues’ long-term future in doubt.
