Sheffield United news amid updates on Everton defender Mason Holgate and Bournemouth ace Chris Mepham
Sheffield United can sign both Everton defender Mason Holgate and Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham in the same window, per Alan Nixon.
The journalist reported on Twitter on 19 January that a move for Holgate is still possible for the Blades.
Even if they are to secure the services of Mepham, it does not necessarily mean they will cool their pursuit of the Toffees player.
Nixon wrote: “Could do him and Holgate if deals were right and then there’s Ahmedhodzic factor. Keeper thing real. Holgate a possible. Irish kid to sign.”
Tough one
Holgate to Sheffield may not happen now as there will be plenty of complications to navigate amid the recent twist.
News emerged that the last-minute demands by the Toffees for a fee in the loan deal put the deal in jeopardy.
Holgate had even travelled for a medical, indicating a significant step toward finalising the move.
Everton’s late stipulation for a fee disrupts the pre-established terms, showcasing a lack of pre-negotiation clarity.

This could strain the relationship between the two clubs, as Sheffield face the challenge of meeting Everton’s financial expectations or renegotiating the terms to salvage the deal.
If the deal to sign Mepham is more straightforward, they’ll go for that and then pursue other defensive options before narrowing in on one.
Holgate may not even be their priority anymore and it remains to be seen whether Sheffield will even return to the negotiation table.
