Pundit shares likelihood of Everton completing £6m Che Adams transfer in January at Goodison Park

Carlton Palmer believes Che Adams will leave Southampton amid interest from Everton in signing him in the January transfer window.

Speaking to Football League World on Saturday (20 January), the pundit questioned whether the Saints’ £6million valuation of the Scotland international alongside his wages could be “too high”.

With the Toffees and Nottingham Forest potentially staring down the barrel of a points deduction, he added that Crystal Palace and Wolves might be a “better option” for the 27-year-old forward as he won’t want to be at risk of an immediate return to the Championship.

“Southampton have put a £6million tag on Che Adams given the interest shown by the likes of Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Everton,” said Palmer. “The striker has refused a new deal at Southampton and his contract is set to expire in the summer as he chases a return to the Premier League.

“The clubs will all be interested in his services, but with the player out of contract in the summer, £6million plus his wages might be considered a little too high. Southampton will lose him for nothing in the summer so I’m sure if the right party comes along with a sensible offer, business will get done.

“With Forest and Everton looking at getting points deductions, maybe Crystal Palace or Wolves might be a better option. He wouldn’t want to join a club that looks like having an immediate return to the Championship.”

No loss

It wouldn’t be much of a loss for Everton if they weren’t able to secure a deal for Adams as he’s not exactly pulling up any trees with Southampton in the Championship.

After missing out on a deal to bring him to Goodison Park over the summer, he’s only scored seven goals in 23 league appearances this season, three of which have come in his past four outings.

There are major question marks over whether Sean Dyche will be handed any money anyway due to the Toffees’ difficult financial situation.

That means exits are more likely to be on the cards this month, with the Blues possibly considering sanctioning a couple of departures following the latest charges handed out to them for breaching the Premier League’s spending rules.

While incomings are by no means impossible, it’s more likely that the Merseysiders will be scouring the loan market to strengthen their squad in this transfer window.
