Everton transfer news: Wages update emerges as Sheffield United want Ben Godfrey in January transfer window
Sheffield United are unlikely to be able to sign Everton defender Ben Godfrey during the January transfer window because of his wages, according to Alan Nixon.
The journalist reported via X on Sunday (21 January) that the Blades were unlikely to be able to afford the 26-year-old this month, as they were unable to pay the money required to pay Mason Holgate’s wages earlier in the window.
Reports emerged in Italy that the Blades were one of a number of teams interested in signing the Everton centre-back alongside both AC Milan and Leeds United [Calciomercato, 21 January] but it now seems unlikely Chris Wilder’s side will win the race.
Replying to a United fan asking about the links, Nixon wrote: “If they can’t do Holgate wages…”
Wait and see
It has been clear for some time that Godfrey doesn’t have a future at Goodison Park while Sean Dyche is in charge at Everton and currently, there are a number of defensive options ahead of the 26-year-old in the pecking order.
Both Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski have been superb so far this season and have limited Godfrey to only one Premier League start against Burnley and while he impressed at Turf Moor, he hasn’t been seen in an Everton shirt since.
A move away during the January window would be the best solution for all parties, but it may not be an easy deal to complete as very few clubs are going to be willing to take on the centre-back’s wages, especially at the bottom of the Premier League.
Whether or not another of the interested clubs make a move before the end of the transfer window remains to be seen, but at the moment it appears as though Godfrey may well be staying put at Goodison Park this month.
