Everton need to be convinced as Leeds United transfer news drops on Ben Godfrey move

Everton have received late interest in Ben Godfrey from Leeds United but remain a “long way off” being convinced by the Championship side, according to David Ornstein.

The Athletic journalist reported [25 January, 4:14pm] that the Whites have asked about the potential signing of Godfrey from Goodison Park before the February 1 deadline.

It is understood that the 26-year-old defender is also open to a move abroad, opening up his transfer options this January, with AC Milan also reportedly interested [Calcio Mercato, 21 January].

Escape route

With just one Premier League appearance this season for the defender, it is imperative for Godfrey’s career that he leaves Goodison Park.

He has slipped down the pecking order, going from a relatively low 15 appearances in all competitions in the last campaign to just three this season. Mason Holgate has a similar issue, having been shipped out to Southampton on loan.

There can be no blame on Sean Dyche’s shoulders for his lack of game time, with the trusted partnership of Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski difficult to replace in such a difficult season.

However, it is evident that Godfrey still has what it takes to be a top-tier centre-back, proving so in Everton’s 2-0 victory over Burnley at the start of December, clearing the ball off the line after Tarkowski’s mistake.

A move to Leeds may not help him to refind his previous form, though. Daniel Farke is more than happy with Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk as his defensive duo.

Even when the latter is injured and Liam Cooper is unavailable, young prospect Charlie Cresswell is still being left out of the squad. Midfielder Ethan Ampadu is entrusted with the defensive duties instead, suggesting there would be little room for Godfrey.
