Everton ready last-gasp January move to sign Pape Gueye as ban expires

Everton want to sign Marseille and Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye in the January transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.

The publication reported on its website on Thursday (25 January) that Marseille are open to letting the 25-year-old leave this month.

TEAMtalk added that the midfielder has only just returned to action, having served a four-month ban at the start of the season for a contract breach that took place in 2020.

New midfielder incoming?

The Everton midfield have impressed under Sean Dyche this season, with the likes of James Garner, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye working hard for the Toffees in the centre of the pitch, along with the more attacking Abdoulaye Doucoure.

But perhaps Dyche wants another enforcer in his team ahead of a crucial period for the club as they look to distance themselves from the Premier League relegation zone.

Wolves are also seemingly interested in the Senegal ace, but Everton may just have an advantage given the fact that Pape Gueye is an international teammate of Toffees man Idrissa Gueye.

Both are currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, with the country the strongest at the tournament so far thanks to their three groups wins out of three, with no other nation achieving that feat.

Dyche will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the displays of his current midfield man in the competition, but he may also be watching the Marseille man with a view to a move before the January transfer window deadline.

In other Everton news, talks are underway over a loanee exit from the Goodison Park club, with the deal potentially going down to the wire this month.
