Last-gasp Everton exit still on the cards for Arsenal-linked Amadou Onana as January transfer update emerges from Belgium
Arsenal could yet close a deal for Everton ace Amadou Onana before the January transfer window closes, according to Sacha Tavolieri.
The Belgian journalist previously reported via his X account (8 January) that Everton and Arsenal were engaged in talks over the midfielder who was keen on the move.
An update has now been provided over two weeks later, with Tavolieri revealing via his X account (25 January) that Financial Fair Play issues are currently preventing Arsenal’s hopes of bringing the deal to a close.
However, he went on to say that supporters must “wait and see”, suggesting that a last-gasp move for Onana is very much on the cards as it “could change everything” for the Toffees.
Frustration
This will be an incredibly frustrating development for Everton fans because as much as they won’t want to sell Onana in the middle of the season with little time to secure any kind of replacement, the club’s financial issues could leave them no choice.
Onana has been a key player for Sean Dyche so far this season, starting 16 of the club’s 21 Premier League matches as well as all four Carabo Cup ties and both FA Cup fixtures so far.
Letting him go certainly wouldn’t be of benefit to the team on the pitch, but it could make all the difference off the pitch when it comes to the club looking to balance the books.
It also seems as if it would be difficult for the 22-year-old to turn down such an attractive move to Arsenal, where he would have the opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football.
As Tavolieri said, it appears as if both sets of supporters will have to “wait and see” what happens in the final week of the window.
