Sheffield United in last-ditch bid to sign Everton duo Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey – Sky Sports journalist
Sheffield United are interested in Everton defensive duo Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate, according to Rob Dorsett.
The Sky Sports senior reporter revealed via his personal X account (31 January) that Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has several defensive targets on his list, including the Everton duo.
The Blades are also interested in Leicester City centre-back Harry Souttar and Newcastle United’s Joe Worrall.
However, it is thought that a deal for Soutar is unlikely, which could increase the possibility of Sheffield moving for Godfrey or Holgate.
Sell?
Getting either Godfrey or Holgate off the books would be fantastic business for the Toffees.
Sean Dyche has hardly used Godfrey this season, and with the club’s financial problems continuing to mount, they will be keen to raise funds wherever possible.
Meanwhile, Holgate is currently out on loan with Southampton, and if the Merseyside club can recall him in order to make his exit permanent, that would also be a big boost for Everton and Dyche.
It is clear that neither player has a future at Goodison Park, and sorting out their long-term prospects sooner rather than later should be high on Everton’s agenda.
However, Sheffield United would not be the ideal destination to sell the players to.
The Blades are one of Everton’s main relegation rivals, and strengthening their rivals at this point in the season would not be ideal. For now, fans must wait and see how the next 24 hours unfold/
