Sheffield United submit late bid to sign Mason Holgate as Everton loan exit development emerges

Sheffield United have made a late bid to sign Mason Holgate on loan from Everton for the rest of the season, according to Alan Nixon.

Writing on his Patreon account (1 February), the newspaper journalist reports that the Blades have tabled a new offer to sign the defender in a move which would see him terminate his current loan at Southampton.

The defender wants to play more regularly and was close to a move to Brammall Lane earlier in the window before a £250k demand curtailed the deal while he was set for a medical, but the defender is now “set to sign” ahead of the 11pm deadline.

Good

It makes no difference to Everton whether or not Holgate is playing at Southampton or Sheffield United, because Sean Dyche has already made the decision that he isn’t good enough to play at Goodison Park.

He’s currently not playing at Southampton and if the Blades want to take him in for the rest of the season and are willing to pay his wages and a fee to get it done, then it suits Everton perfectly.

He won’t be able to play against the Toffees due to Premier League rules anyway, but ultimately it boosts the balance of the accounts slightly and hopefully means the player can make a market for himself ahead of the summer window.

Everton

Holgate is versatile and had options, but with the Toffees opting to keep hold of Ben Godfrey for the second half of the season and keeping their squad together, there is no room for him here.

Hopefully he can go and play regularly now in the Premier League, and do enough to convince someone to take him off our hands permanently at the end of the season for a decent fee.
