Gary O’Neil aims dig at Everton after failed Wolves deal on Deadline Day
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has aimed a dig at Everton after his club failed to sign Chelsea striker Armando Broja on Deadline Day.
The Stamford Bridge forward has joined fellow West London side Fulham on loan until the end of the season [official Fulham website, 2 February].
Regarding the failed transfer at Molineux, O’Neil referenced the 10-point deduction handed to Everton earlier this season for breaching financial rules.
“We could not afford to do it,” said O’Neil, as quoted by Sky Sports. “That is where we are as a football club. But we have not been deducted 10 points.”
Cheap shot
It was a cheap shot from O’Neil, who was perhaps frustrated more than anything after his club failed to bring in a new attacker in the form of Broja.
The failed move begs the question as to why clubs leave things so late in transfer windows, with the Albania international finally leaving Chelsea on Deadline Day.
He hasn’t exactly been firing on all cylinders this season, but Broja should still boost Fulham’s front line, helping out current striker Raul Jimenez, once of Wolves.
O’Neil’s side meanwhile have been enjoying themselves this season, with the club currently sitting in 11th place in the Premier League table.
They are just two points and one place behind Chelsea, with the Blues perhaps not wanting to sell Broja to a direct rival.

Ironically, however, they have sold them to their West London rivals Fulham, who aren’t exactly that far behind them and Wolves in the standings.
