Everton make transfer decision on young goalkeeper Jack Barrett

Everton youngster Jack Barrett has joined Canadian side Cavalry FC on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Toffees confirmed the 21-year-old goalkeeper’s temporary departure via their Everton Academy account on Twitter on Friday (9 February).

Barrett has been on Everton’s books since the age of nine and has played three times for the Premier League 2 side this term.

Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon told the club’s website [9 February]: “Jack fits the profile of the goalkeeper we like.

“He is an excellent distributor of the ball and can quarterback the play, whilst being quick to deal with danger very well.

“He’s had a good upbringing from a young age at a top club and will provide excellent depth in our goalkeeping position.”

Barrett has been around at Goodison Park for a while now and it is always nice to see an academy graduate break into the first team.

However, he has yet to make the senior squad and he will be 22 come the end of the season.

The problem Barrett faces is that Jordan Pickford is the undisputed number one, while Joao Virginia and Andy Lonergan provide back-up.

Barrett is also not a regular for the Under-23s side, so it makes sense for him to go out and get some minutes elsewhere.

The surprising aspect is that he has joined Cavalry FC, but the Alberta-based club do compete in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The hope is that Barrett can play regularly during his short time in Canada and return a better player in the summer – or beyond if the deal is extended. This is a move that very much benefits everyone involved.
