James Tarkowski rages after ‘dubious’ Everton decision in Manchester City defeat

Everton defender James Tarkowski has been left fuming by the referee’s decision to award Manchester City a corner during their win over the Toffees, labelling the decision “dubious”.

Sean Dyche’s side continued their winless run in the Premier League with a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday (11 February) with Erling Haaland’s brace helping the Champions claim all three points against the Toffees.

The Norwegian fired in his opener from a corner, but Tarkowski and a number of Everton supporters believed that the ball had gone out of play off of Ruben Dias, rather than Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

As quoted by the Daily Mirror on Sunday (11 February) he said: “We got punished off a dubious corner. For me, Calvert-Lewin’s trying to head it that way and I think it was Dias trying to head it the other way. It goes where Dias heads it and then they get the corner again.

“So, once again, another decision that goes against us, but there’s nothing we can do about that. I just don’t feel like there are many that have gone our way. I don’t remember sitting back and thinking ‘Oh, that’s gone in our favour’.

“Then you go and speak to the ref and it’s like ‘We’ll, look at it’. Well, it’s no good looking at it now, is it? We need you to look at it on the pitch and get it right.”

James Tarkowski and Everton undone by more Premier League controversy

Everton supporters don’t need any more reasons to be unhappy with the Premier League as they already feel incredibly hard done by with the decision to deduct the Toffees ten points for a breach of profit and sustainability rules.

This decision came on the pitch rather than in the boardroom, but it does feel as though Dyche’s side is due a stroke of luck or two as they continue to battle against relegation.

Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite were phenomenal against Manchester City for most of the game and their defensive display certainly deserved at least a point, but that hard work was undone by what seemed a controversial decision.

Hopefully, the luck will begin to shift at Goodison in the next few weeks, the Toffees could certainly do with a helping hand to get themselves out of the relegation zone.
