Everton transfer news: James Garner exit on cards after Tottenham update
Tottenham are plotting a move for Everton midfielder James Garner ahead of the summer transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.
The website reported [18 February] that the 22-year-old has emerged as a player on Tottenham’s transfer wishlist, having missed out on Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher in January.
It is understood that Spurs could still go back in for the Chelsea star, but Garner is seen as an alternative after impressing at Goodison Park over the last 18 months.
Could James Garner leave Goodison Park?
Garner has been one of the most important players under Sean Dyche this season, starting 22 of the Toffees’ 24 league matches so far. He has formed midfield partnerships with Idrissa Gana Gueye and Amadou Onana this season, which has helped oversee eight league victories.
Despite just one goal and one assist in the league so far, the midfielder’s work ethic and energy in the middle of the park make him an invaluable asset at Goodison Park and would be a huge miss if Spurs were to swoop in.
Everton’s current situation, threatened by relegation, is a huge complication when it comes to transfers, especially when FFP is involved so heavily.
Onana, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jarrad Branthwaite could all leave Everton at the end of the season, with plenty of suitors, including Spurs again, ready to swoop in and steal the club’s stars. It is the inevitability that comes hand in hand with being a Premier League club that could be playing in the Championship next season.

However, Garner’s impact at the club feels somewhat underappreciated. He has been flying under the radar and has been quietly working away under Dyche, emerging as one of the most key players at Goodison Park.
Whether Spurs do come in for him or not, Garner still has a vital part to play in Everton’s season as they battle against the possibility of relegation this season. He has played 47 times since arriving from Manchester United in August 2022.
