Everton: Glenn Murray makes James Tarkowski joke after Brighton incident
Glenn Murray made a joke about James Tarkowski despite him having an injury concern in the Everton v Brighton clash on 24 February.
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium and there was an incident in the second half in which Ewan Ferguson got the back of Tarkowski’s head and the English defender fell to the floor and was in pain.
Murray joked about this being part and parcel of the way he plays while he was not yet back on his feet.
Speaking on the Premier League world feed, Murray, a former Seagulls striker, said (24 February, 16:12): “Looks like Ferguson stepped into Tarkowski. Very much accidental. Just runs into him.
“I don’t think it’s anything untoward by the young Irishman.
“Tarkowski very well placed. Takes a knee to the face. for his hard work. If there’s one man who thrives on physical contact is the Everton captain. He looks so happy now that he’s kneed in the face.”
Pretty bizarre take on the Everton captain
Murray’s joke about Tarkowski’s injury lacked sensitivity towards the potential seriousness of head injuries in football.
As a former professional player turned commentator, Murray should recognise the importance of promoting player safety and well-being, especially when discussing incidents involving head trauma.
Head injuries are a significant concern in football due to the risk of concussions and their long-term effects on players’ health.
Making light of such incidents, even in jest, can trivialise the severity of head injuries and undermine efforts to raise awareness about their risks.
As a commentator, Murray has a responsibility to choose his words carefully and demonstrate respect for the welfare of the players.

While injecting humour into commentary can enhance the viewing experience, it’s crucial to maintain a balance and avoid making light of potentially harmful situations, particularly when it comes to injuries as serious as head trauma.
