Everton: BBC pundit shares verdict on Dominic Calvert-Lewin after goalless 21 games

By Jessica Elliott

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to start scoring more goals, says Stephen Kelly.

The striker hasn’t found the net since October and has only recorded one assist this season, coming against Tottenham at the start of the month.

After playing 68 minutes in Saturday’s (24 February) 1-1 draw against Brighton and failing to find the net again, Calvert-Lewin has received a lot of criticism from fans and pundits alike.

“The thing is, he offers more than just goals,” Kelly told Football Daily (25 February). “I know that because of his running ability, he puts teams under pressure, but you need goals. You need someone that’s going to score.

“They’re not conceding loads. [Jordan] Pickford is pulling off a lot of saves, defensively they’re a bit more open, but if you don’t have someone that’s going to get you goals or looks like they’re going to even be on the goal trail, then it’s going to be an issue.”

The forward is not in his best form and is statistically the worst finisher in the Premier League this season, according to WhoScored.

Under Sean Dyche, the 26-year-old is being asked to play a role that requires more of him, rather than being a traditional poacher. He must run, press and create chances, but he isn’t doing much of that either.

Some argue that Calvert-Lewin isn’t getting the service that he needs, but others would say that he needs to be more clinical.

Everton have only scored 28 goals so far this campaign and the fans are frustrated with the lack of chances that are being finished by the marksman. He has nine expected goals, as per FotMob, and only three goals to his name, so none of the statistics speak positively of the Englishman.

Whether it’s a lack of confidence or how he is being played, something desperately needs to change if Calvert-Lewin is to keep his place in the Toffee’s line-up

In other Everton news, a politician has claimed Richard Masters is now engaging in “discrimination” against the Toffees.
